It was just like any other day and I opened my mailbox to check who all were tying to ruin my beautiful morning by expecting me to work on their problems; to freak me out there were almost 200 emails waiting to be read and not surprisingly, most of them were of no use at all. More than eightscore of them were automated alerts which made no sense and could be completely avoided.
The first thought that crossed my mind was why do people complicate already overburdened lives; if only I had an answer!
I tried to convince them to do otherwise but all in vain, they believe alerts which are not to be acted upon are “informative”. Never in my whole life did I notice such a gross misuse of the word! Weather report for every minute is informative but do we really need that information?!
More often than not such notions are the result of ignorance (ignorance is not always bliss) of people who are not able to differentiate useful information from spam and unfortunately the world is not scarce of such people. In the e-age which runs on information, it is imperative to use common sense so as to efficiently manage the show. For situations like these I like the Unix way, it throws an alert only when something goes wrong; if there is no message, everything went well. Didn’t they say, “No news is good news!”
The worst part of information overdose is that it makes us prone to miss the important details. I believe in the KISS (Keep is Simple, Stupid) principle and life can be a lot easier if we use common sense to filter unnecessary things out of it.
P.S. the post is not aimed to disgrace a person in particular rather the ignorance is being challenged.
Does this crop up in your mind as well?? I’ve come across bosses as well as leaders and there really is a vacuum of leadership!
Leaders are different from bosses in following ways (besides 9Cs):
- Bosses always poke their nose into everything (even if it’s not required) while Leaders have more important things to manage.
- Bosses always hang around and instruct what to do while Leaders let you make decisions.
- Leaders have clarity in thoughts while Bosses beat around the bush.
- Leaders lead by examples while Bosses lead by extortion.
and most importantly:
- Leaders create Future Leaders while Bosses create subordinates!
As Dale Carnegie puts it, “leadership, like any other skill, is not something what we are born with , it must be learned.” Most people don’t want to do so because it’s risky, it involves uncertainty and one is held brutally accountable for the decisions.
We need people who can lead and persuade others, who can make decisions, show courage and conviction, and can instill leadership skills! Everyone has the power to do so, we just need to realize what we lack and we are already in the process of learning the skills.
So let’s become a part of the solution, by creating leaders within ourselves, not part of the problem!!
’twas a Joyous Sunday morning and I was trying to resleep (if the word exists) when I heard my favorite heavy metal drumming.. who is playing drums so loud in the morning, I thought, trying to concentrate on my sleep.
After a while, it started again this time louder than ever. I woke up just to find out it was the ringtone of my cell phone!
P: Hi, How are you?
Me: I am good, what’s up with you?
some normal talk about work and life goes on for a while…
P: Hows your studies going?
Me: I couldn’t continue because of the heavy work schedule.
P: Dude, work is always there but you’ve got to concentrate on the priorities as well. Do you always want to work like this or would you like to be in a position where hundreds of them get working even if you shoot a single mail. This is the right time for you, get going and you’ll get what you deserve.
Those words were so inspiring that it made me start studying again for the higher cause. I wonder sometimes a simple incident or a couple of words can inspire us so much!
Inspiration factors are different for everyone, some get inspired by setbacks while others by success. During college days I used quotes to beat the exam stress and get studying (though it was not about marks, it was about more marks!).
When I googled it, I founds some great inspiration factors. For some people it’s the smile of their kid, rains for others. While some get inspired by nature’s beauty, others get enthusiastic by reading about it. Whatever may be the trigger, it’s effect that matters!! So, what’s inspiring you today?!
I also didn’t know the meaning until the day I had to be there…
Doctor: Is one of your friends around?
Me: Not really, almost everyone has gone to Goa… there is a guy who can come if it’s really urgent.
Doctor: Whoa! Are you sure you don’t want to call anyone here?
Me: This is just a minor surgery, is someone really required? can’t we go ahead…
Doctor: Alright gentleman, please sign the forms.
(the form said I authorize the doctor to operate on me and I take the responsibility and other stuff like that, as if I was going for a bypass surgery!)
I handed over the form to Nurse with my autograph on it.
Nurse: Go straight and take 1st left for OT. Wait for a few minutes there.
Me: What in the whole world is this OT?
Nurse: You want to go to Operation Theatre, don’t you?
It wasn’t very long when I got instructions to wear OT clothes and take out everything I had (watch, wallet, rings etc)… But my astrologer told not to take the rings out (I kind of murmured)… Rings are more important than your eyes?! (don’t know if someone told this or I just heard out of nowhere).
In next couple of minutes I was lying on the OT bed with those green clothes feeling little cold. Till now I had seen OTs only in Movies which created an aura of panic, but being there is a different ball game altogether which is inexplicable in words.
Doctor: How do you feel?
Me: Not too bad…
Doctor: Don’t worry, it’ll be fine.
Me: Am I going to be on anesthesia?
Doctor: Only nearby eyes…pause… We’ll start now.
Even after closing my eyes, I could make bright lights all around… they gave some injections near eyebrows… the Doctor talked to Nurse and started operating (I could hear the conversation and could feel all the movements.) this continued for some time and I was like, exploring the fun part, “man OT is not that bad after all!”
Doctor: let me know if it hurts, we’ve got solution for everything.
Me: Okay, it does hurt a little, can you get rid of that? (ignorant of the fact that my words will get me one more injection near my eyes! terrible.)
Doctor: Here we go, you won’t complain now!
though it didn’t hurt after that, I could still feel the stitches (now I knew how clothes felt when being stitched!! )
After 30 mins when I opened my eyes; there was a huge bandage, enough to be seen from far away, at my eyebrow and it hurt as well! I came out of the OT to check if I could leave or any other formality was left.
Nurse (smiling): You got to pay Rs. 143.
the surgery was covered by my medical insurance so I was charged for very few things.
Me (taking out the money from wallet): Can you do that for me? It doesn’t look good to be in the billing queue with all the bandages.
I wanted to come back and take rest before anyone could see and threw thousands of questions, though my wish was not granted and I had to explain people for almost a week about how I hurt my eyebrow!
When I am not writing, I am most probably reading and there is so much of it that a lifetime doesn’t seem to be sufficient! Nevertheless, this weekend was not much eventful and I got chance to read scores of Blogs on almost all the topics of the world; people write about anything and everything. I read blogs related to college, sports, fashion, pets, pubs and the list goes on and on.
There are 9 years old kids who write about toys, paintings and school as well as 70 years young people who tend to write about life and other experiences.
The most common topics include talking about personal lives, politics, places, sports, parties, weddings, real estate, events, technology, environment, food and even about blogging. there are people who put only pictures (remember, a picture is worth 1000 words!) while there are guys who are crazy about advertisements and their blogs are full of ads worth watching!
Amidst all this fun and entertainment, there are those who blog about life’s challenges, struggles and how did they overcome those. I read a blog about how cancer changed the life of a lady and the way she handles her kids along with the treatment and hopes to live a cancer free life again.
There is this lady who had 12 pregnancies/miscarriages and she blogs about how did she learn that surrogate mother is not a bad idea and how things are taking shape since then.
Heidi, after being married and having a kid realizes that she loves her old friend, gets out of the marriage and starts living with her friend. She changes her mind again and comes to her husband and kid to live a normal life, later realizes that she is not lesbian rather there is someone else within her (Katie) who is so and she suffers from multiple personality disorder!
I was amazed as well as shocked to learn that people put so much about their personal lives on a public forum (it requires so much fortitude). I’d never dare to blog something like that (It’s like being nude in public, not everyone can handle it). People think differently depending on how grownup is the society and how mature is others’ behavior after knowing all this about someone!
Overall blogging is a great tool not only to express oneself but to challenge the beliefs and thought pattern prevailing in the society. So what are you blogging today?!
Bangalore, 27th Jan 2010: It was the 2nd day when I had to wake up at 7 in the morning, believe me more than half the planet was sleeping! (I don’t remember when was the last time I got up so early.) I am not going to describe how awesome it was to watch the Sun rise, I’ve seen that zillions of times!
I managed to get ready in next 45 minute ignorant of the fact that the struggle had just begun.
Bus Stop: My watch showed 7.50 AM; being alien to the bus stop at this time; I didn’t know what to expect. I saw a familiar face (yeah, I did mention it was my 2nd day) and decided to ignore it…
Missed the 1st bus thinking it was too crowded… second one had similar rush if not more (If I don’t catch this one, I’ll probably end up taking more crowded one besides getting late, I said to myself). Coincidentally the “familiar face” decided to board the same bus. Not to my surprise all the seats were occupied; since the journey was of more than 13 kms I thought I might get lucky in between.
Next Stop: The gentleman beside me decided to get down, leaving the most wanted place which was equidistant from me and the “familiar face“; I looked at her (to confess, she was a pretty lady; I generally don’t pay much attention to guys) and she seemed to be in need of that seat more than me. I smiled and offered her to take the place (then thought, don’t they always claim to be equal, so they should get equal opportunity to stand in a bus… it was too late by then besides I had to prove I was a decent guy!)
Nevertheless, so many other stops passed and I was still standing… finally at 8.55, I got down and proceeded towards the training room (and I didn’t have luxury to sleep there). There were 3 kind of ppl attending the training, those who were interested in it, those who were there because they didn’t have anything better to do and those who were there to entertain themselves and get a break from work. If you are still reading, you must have guessed which category I belonged to!
It was boring as hell and I literally had to struggle to keep myself awake; had I tried to read those slides myself, I’d have understood much more. Most of the times I was reading mails and trying change my browser’s looks. After trying scores of them, I finally settled for WordPress Vintage Press. Then came the most important part of it, “the attendance sheet.” How else was I supposed to prove my presence for the torturous bootcamp!!
