How do they teach about Internet at college

May 10, 2008

I’ve been using college Internet for the last couple of months and I realised how it helps us internet picunderstand and exploit the net better!!
Lets take it one at a time…

Banning YouTube: It took me a lot of troubles to find out how to still have access to it. [Its one of the sites that changed the way we look at Internet. why ban it?! ]

FaceBook Banned: Who doesn’t know how to access it through proxy!!

Access restriction to orkut: You gotta be kidding me.. after some googling, one can open it easily!!

now coming to the title of the post, I’m grateful to our college authorities for banning all those sites; it provided me with ample opportunities to discover Internet better so as to exploit it to the fullest!!

NOTE: If you happen to be one of those guys who restrict the sites for access, try googling other ways to access the same and ban that too.

My Stand on this: Access restriction is not the solution. The use of a specific site should be left to the users’ discretion.

The Idea: Try banning Google. It leads to every other thing!! ;)

College vs Learning

December 11, 2007

Officially our classes are over, next is Internship for which I am going elsewhere!!

One of my friends asked me after the last exam, “What did u learn in those years spent in college?” For a minute I was like errr… When I seriously gave it a thought, here is what I learnt.

learning_curve4.jpg

  • Adapt and enjoy changes. Some thing or the other keeps changing, you can’t avoid it, Better learn to enjoy them.
  • Face the world with confidance. Its all about getting prepared for things to come and being yourself in all situations.
  • Meet deadlines. Its important, more than sleep, food or anything. Project and assignment submissions on time taught so many things, Patience, Passion, ability to fight back, thinking in different directions etc. etc.
  • Manage your time well. There are many things to be done in so less time, it has to be managed in such a way that you have time for everything. As thay say: “Busy ppl have time for everything!
  • There are no free lunches. You got to work for everything you want.
  • There are some things not in your control. Do what you can, rest will take care of itself.
  • You have to live with the concequences of ur decisions. Making a good decision is an art, better learn it before life teaches, the tough way!!
  • You are more wiser today than you were yesturday. Everyday has something to teach which can change the way you see the world. As my school motto said “Everyday Towards Progress.”
  • Life teaches everything. If there is something you need to learn or know for survial, life has its own ways to teach.

Lets see where does life takes us and what else is there in reserve!!

p.s. I forgot to mention about the subjects I learnt, isn’t it too obvious… ;)

Java

October 19, 2007

Java SparrowYes I know Java is very powerful language… I realised that today… No, I didn’t learn it in 1 day… We had Java lab test today and I realised that the programs which seem difficult in c++ is child’s play in “Java”!! I found it better and powerful than c++ but people might have different opinions… Read a comparison here. I don’t think just reading the comparisons would help…We’ve been doing that for long, but to actually feel the power you got to use it!!!

Sessionals due next week and I got lots to study. Me leaving now… Have a nice weekend!! :)

Next

October 13, 2007

200px-transformers07.jpgI saw 2 movies today 3rd one just finished now… NEXT, Transformers and Dil Dosti etc…Though I liked transformers the most, others were fun watching too..

For the last few days I didn’t get much time to read the book, I skipped some parts and hopefully I’ll finish it by tomorrow…

As days pass, I get the feeling of leaving the place… I am not sad (read emotional fool) rather I am looking forward to it… They said u’ll miss school; but they didn’t consider the things life has to offer after school… They say childhood are the best days, but they don’t see the better days to come…I am happy about everything; leaving school, college, discovering my life… sure I sometimes miss those days in school, but surely I don’t want them back…

Lets not get into those details, it will take ages to come to consensus… for now I am enjoying last couple of months of college life!! :)

To Learn or Not To

October 12, 2007

Why some of them don’t see new things coming up when they get old??! okay let me put this differently…

How do you react if you talk about YouTube and the other person didn’t even hear of it!! Shocking!! isnt it…yes indeed, specially when they claim to serve 70 million videos per day to six million unique users daily, with more than 60,000 videos being uploaded per day.

url.jpgHow about the same expression with Firefox? (with more than 200 million ppl using it) Ridiculous…(imagine the height of ignorance when the other person claims to be a technologist!!) Well that leads me to say “You’ve really grown old!!” and better update to prevent being obsolete!!

If at some point of time, you think u’ve learnt enough; Think Again!!

Well lets talk about something else… I watched 2 movies today… “When Harry Met Sally” and “Before Sunset“… and tomorrow being holiday for us (for a change), I got time to watch some more…u ppl enjoy the weekend too :)

Software Development Life Cycle

October 9, 2007

There was this mid term demo of our mini project today… It was fun… the presentation part of it; the demonstration part of it and the preparation part of it. :) bridge the gap

I believe this is the way we bridge the gap between the industry and the academia… this goes beyond all those books, lectures (lecturers too ;) ) I enjoyed every bit of it…

It’s about learning things on our own, putting up various knowledge together to make something more powerful in terms of usage (this reminds me of Cluster Computing)… Its like joining pieces of woods to make a boat and the final result is not just a collection of woods, its much more than that!!

I now know why do they call software development a “life cycle“… the work that goes behind the scenes is worth everything… Trying to make things work, managing time, working in a team for the overall cause, managing people, making sure that everything is just right… It brings the best out of you..

Well… I am now looking forward to my seminar, due this Friday… I hope to enjoy that too.. :)
